This Simple Cherry Crisp Will Make Your Summer That Much Sweeter

Nothing complements a summertime meal quite like a fruit-laden dessert – and this cherry crisp is easier to make than pie. There’s no better way to showcase the popular summer fruit in its prime than with a sweet, buttery golden oat topping that beautifully contrasts with the warm fruit beneath. Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream that can melt into both layers.

The political world Trump made

WELCOME TO AMERICA’S NEW POLITICAL REALITY, courtesy of Donald Trump.
THE BULK OF THIS WEEK will be focused on President DONALD TRUMP’S attack on Reps. ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ, AYANNA PRESSLEY, ILHAN OMAR and RASHIDA TLAIB, a.k.a. The Squad. It’s all members of Congress were getting asked about Monday when we were in the Capitol.
TONIGHT, around 7 p.m., Congress will vote on the resolution to condemn “President Trump’s racist comments directed at Members of Congress.” On the next day, the president will fly to North Carolina for a political rally, where we’d be shocked if this didn’t come up.
-- THE PRESIDENT NOW HAS A FOIL, and it’s four young women of color who are from the energetic progressive wing of the Democratic Party. Some Republicans think the president is trying to highlight political views he believes are out of the mainstream -- albeit ham-handedly.
-- FOR DEMOCRATS, this development comes after years of complaints by some in the party that they were led by white septuagenarians. AOC, Pressley, Omar and Tlaib now rank among the most recognizable political figures in America. They got picked up by live cable Monday, and HVC Studio A -- a news conference room on Capitol Hill used by party leaders like Speaker NANCY PELOSI -- was packed with reporters during The Squad’s news conference Monday. More from Heather Caygle and Sarah Ferris on the presser

-- REPUBLICANS now have to vote on whether they approve of TRUMP’S comments. Most are likely to stick with Trump, even while they say privately he’s a boor for thinking and voicing these thoughts. It will be very instructive to see whether Republicans like Rep. Paul Mitchell (Mich.), a member of House GOP leadership who has criticized Trump over the tweets, end up voting with Democrats. Monday evening, senior Republicans told us they expected 10 or fewer Republicans would vote to condemn Trump.
A QUESTION FOR REPUBLICANS TO PONDER: What would you tell your child if they sent those tweets? Would you say it was OK?
-- THE SQUAD found a way to explain succinctly why they believe TRUMP is a racist and why he should be impeached. They were able to tie this incident to a set of immigration policies that Democrats of all stripes believe are wrongheaded and criminal.
-- THEY ALSO HIGHLIGHTED, perhaps unintentionally, what the Republican Party has become on Capitol Hill: a bastion of mostly white men who are unable or unwilling to criticize a white president who has targeted brown and black women.
THE GOP CONUNDRUM: “Trump ambushes Republicans with attacks on minority congresswomen,” by Burgess Everett and John Bresnahan
SENATE MAJORITY LEADER MITCH MCCONNELL is expected to address Trump’s comments at his weekly press conference today. House GOP leadership will have a news conference at 10 a.m.
THE DEMOCRATS’ RESOLUTION “strongly condemns President Donald Trump’s racist comments that have legitimized and increased fear and hatred of new Americans and people of color by saying that our fellow Americans who are immigrants, and those who may look to the President like immigrants, should ‘go back’ to other countries, by referring to immigrants and asylum seekers as ‘invaders,’ and by saying that Members of Congress who are immigrants (or those of our colleagues who are wrongly assumed to be immigrants) do not belong in Congress or in the United States of America.” Read the Dems’ condemnation resolution
NYT’S ANNIE KARNI: “Almost two years after Charlottesville, when Mr. Trump refused to condemn white supremacists after their deadly clash with a crowd protesting them, presidential statements widely condemned as racist are still putting White House officials in the awkward position of having to defend comments they privately wish Mr. Trump had not made. But they are also causing less heartburn in the West Wing than they used to.” NYT
A CNN CHYRON FOR THE AGES: “TRUMP DENIES RACIST TWEETS WERE RACIST”
-- IT’S NOT JUST CNN … Even the normally cautious and studiously neutral AP is running with this headline: “Trump digs in on racist tweets: ‘Many people agree with me’”
-- WAPO EDITOR MARTY BARON: ““The Post traditionally has been cautious in the terminology it uses to characterize individuals’ statements, because a news organization’s job is to inform its readers as dispassionately as possible … Decisions about the terminology we use are made only after a thorough discussion among senior editors. We had that discussion today about President Trump’s use of a longstanding slur against African Americans and other minorities. The ‘go back’ trope is deeply rooted in the history of racism in the United States. Therefore, we have concluded that ‘racist’ is the proper term to apply to the language he used Sunday.’” WaPo

Good Tuesday morning.
THE LATEST ON THE DEBT CEILING -- “Pelosi rejects short-term debt ceiling hike as budget talks extend,” by Caitlin Emma: “House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Monday night turned aside the notion of a short-term debt ceiling hike as she continues negotiating on a broader budget deal with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.
“After days of hashing out their positions over the phone, Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Mnuchin spoke again tonight, with plans to talk on Tuesday, according to a Pelosi aide. ‘We shall see,’ Pelosi said when asked about the possibility of striking a sweeping two-year agreement before the August recess that lifts the budget caps and the debt limit.
“‘The issues are what they are. They’ll be here now, they’ll be here later,’ she said. ‘The interests of the full faith and credit of the United States of America are served by us doing this as soon as possible.’ Pelosi would not speculate on a backup plan if congressional leaders and the White House fail to strike an accord before the break.” POLITICO
-- TRUTH BOMB … IF THE DEBT CEILING NEEDS RAISING and there’s no budget deal, there is close to zero chance Pelosi, Mnuchin and Hill Republicans allow the nation to barrel toward default. Could this get paired with something besides a budget deal if it’s not ready? Sure.
A POMPEO/ZARIF SUMMIT? -- “Top Iran diplomat says talks on ballistic missiles possible,” by AP’s Jon Gambrell in Dubai, United Arab Emirates: “Iran’s foreign minister has suggested for the first time that the Islamic Republic’s ballistic missile program could be up for negotiations with the U.S., a possible opening for talks as tensions remain high between Tehran and Washington over the collapsing nuclear deal.
“Mohammad Javad Zarif offered an initially high price for such negotiations — the halt of American arms sales to both Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, two key U.S. allies in the Persian Gulf.
“But the fact that he mentioned it at all potentially represents a change in policy. The country’s ballistic missile program remains under control of the Iranian paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, which answers only to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.” AP
-- ZARIF is in New York and told NBC’s LESTER HOLT this: “In an interview with NBC Nightly News’ Lester Holt, Zarif said the door is ‘wide open’ to diplomacy if Trump removes the array of sanctions he has imposed since 2017 that have slashed the country’s oil exports and damaged its economy. ‘Once those sanctions are lifted, then ... the room for negotiation is wide open,’ Zarif said during a visit to New York for a U.N. conference.” NBC
-- THE IRANIANS told us that Zarif is not meeting with any U.S. officials while he is in the United States. But he does have his usual private sitdowns in New York with think tankers and journalists.
-- WHAT EUROPE IS DOING … “E.U. Ministers, Scrambling to Save Iran Nuclear Deal, Play Down Breaches,” by NYT’s Matina Stevis-Gridneff in Brussels: “Scrambling to save the nuclear agreement with Iran, European foreign ministers declared Monday that Iranian breaches so far were not serious enough to take steps that could lead to reimposed international sanctions and a collapse of the accord.
“That conclusion, reached at a meeting in Brussels, effectively extended a lifeline for the 2015 nuclear agreement in defiance of pressure by the Trump administration. The agreement has been increasingly imperiled since the United States abandoned the accord more than a year ago and renewed its own sanctions on Iran.” NYT
2020 WATCH … THE CASH DASH … DAVID SIDERS, ZACH MONTELLARO and SCOTT BLAND: “‘Doomsday scenario’: Cash shortage squeezes huge Dem field”: “Months of bleak polling couldn’t stop the parade of lower-level Democrats crowding into the presidential primary. But bankruptcy might.
“Eleven Democratic presidential candidates — nearly half of the sprawling field — spent more campaign cash than they raised in the second quarter of the year, according to new financial disclosures filed Monday. Eight contenders active in the spring limped forward with less than $1 million in cash on hand, and several top-tier contenders were already spending multiples of what their lower-profile competitors raised.
“The financial squeeze is set to drastically shrink the lineup of Democratic contenders in the coming months, barring major shifts in momentum, as candidates grapple with the doldrums of summer fundraising and the high costs of staffing national campaigns and building donor lists big enough to qualify for future Democratic National Committee debates.
“The numbers also reveal the tremendous pressure on lesser-known candidates to make a splash in the debates at the end of this month — potentially the last chance some will have to attract a burst of support as their expenses pile up.” POLITICO

Cummings told DeVos in a letter that his move came after ‘disturbing new revelations’ released by the Education Department’s inspector general in May about how DeVos had used personal email while on the job.” POLITICO
TRUMP’S TUESDAY -- The president will participate in a Cabinet meeting at 11:30 a.m. in the Cabinet Room. He will have lunch with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at 12:45 p.m. in the private dining room. Trump will then meet with the congressional GOP leadership at 4 p.m. in the Roosevelt Room.

“Turning to Mr. Grenell, Ms. Merkel said his style ‘took getting used to,’ according to participants of the February meeting in Munich. She encapsulated the sentiments of Berlin’s political class, which has been struggling to come to terms with Mr. Grenell’s unorthodox diplomacy since he arrived last year, delivering to Berlin a shock similar to President Trump’s own disruption of establishment Washington.

lmmigrant rights advocates across the United States say they've seen few signs of the ICE raids that Trump administration officials had warned would begin Sunday.

Does that mean officials changed their plans? Or is the operation still unfolding?
A senior immigration official who has seen the operation plans told CNN the list of target cities and individuals remains the same. The official had not received any details about total arrests so far. Officials previously have said ICE agents in 10 cities would be seeking 2,000 undocumented immigrants who'd been ordered removed from the United States.
A senior administration official told CNN that parts of the ICE deportation operation began on Saturday and would be expanded into other cities over the coming days.
"I wouldn't expect a big splash that matches the hysteria we've heard over the last several days," that official said.

2,000 undocumented immigrants in 10 cities

There also haven't been any confirmed reports of migrants being apprehended in Baltimore, Chicago or New York, immigrant advocacy groups in those cities told CNN.
"For the most part, it's quiet," said Cara Yi, a spokeswoman for the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights. "We've been dispatching rapid-response teams out to meet with people who have reported ICE activity over our hotline. None have been confirmed as of yet."
Such ICE operations are not unprecedented. But it's uncommon for officials to talk about them so extensively before they occur. Some advocates questioned whether the President and his administration had released details about raids simply as a scare tactic. Others cautioned that it's too soon to say.
"It's very quiet. Let's hope it stays that way," said Jose Mario Cabrera of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, speaking to CNN Sunday afternoon.

Trump’s Favorite Twitter Troll Claims BuzzFeed Is Threatening To Doxx Him

One of President Donald Trump’s favorite Twitter trolls claimed Monday that a BuzzFeed reporter is threatening to reveal his identity.
“I have spoken with a reporter from Buzzfeed and they claim to have found my private Facebook profile, run a background check on me, and are prepared to release my name to the public, despite finding that I have no criminal background, nor is there any Newworthy reason to do so,” Carpe Donktum wrote in a tweet Monday.

“I have explained to them that this morally reprehensible act would put not only myself in very real danger, but my family who are VERY MUCH private citizens,” he added, noting that he wishes the media would respect his family’s privacy.(RELATED: Twitter Temporarily Suspended Trump’s Favorite Troll After Posting Tweet Mocking CNN’s Jim Acosta)
Donktum, an account known for creating satirical memes and videos mocking CNN’s coverage of Trump, attended the president’s July 11 social media summit and visited the White House less than a week before the event. He has also posted a photo of himself that is displayed prominently on his Twitter profile.

Trump has retweeted Donktum’s tweets in the past, including one in April mocking former Vice President Joe Biden. Trump also retweeted a video from the account in February poking fun at Democratic lawmakers who attended the president’s 2019 State of the Union speech.
BuzzFeed has not responded to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request to confirm that the outlet is preparing to reveal Donktum’s identity.

Biden healthcare plan draws contrast with White House rivals Read more at https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/world/biden-healthcare-plan-draws-contrast-with-white-house-rivals-11721924

WASHINGTON: Democratic presidential front-runner Joe Biden unveiled a US$750 billion healthcare plan on Monday that he said would strengthen the Affordable Care Act, drawing a contrast with rivals who back a more sweeping "Medicare for All" government-run system.
Biden portrayed White House rivals led by U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, who back a single-payer plan that eliminates private insurance, as a threat to former President Barack Obama's signature healthcare law known as Obamacare.

“I understand the appeal of Medicare for All. But folks supporting it should be clear that it means getting rid of Obamacare, and I’m not for that," Biden, who was Obama's vice president for eight years, said in a video.
Sanders is the lead Senate sponsor of a Medicare for All bill that would shift Americans into a Medicare-based, single-payer government-run system that eliminates private insurance. Medicare is the government insurance plan for the elderly.
Four other White House candidates in the U.S. Senate - Kirsten Gillibrand, Cory Booker, Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren - also support the proposal, which has become one of the primary points of contention in the Democratic race to select a nominee to challenge Republican President Donald Trump in 2020.
Obamacare, a longtime target of Trump and other Republicans who have tried to repeal it, is a popular program with Democrats.
Biden's healthcare plan, estimated to cost
US$750 billion over 10 years and paid for partly by higher taxes on the wealthy, would include a public option that would let people enroll in a paid government healthcare plan that exists alongside private insurance.
"We have to protect and build on Obamacare," Biden said in the video.
Sanders responded that he had fought to improve and pass Obamacare and protect the law from Republican efforts to repeal it.
"But I will not be deterred from ending the corporate greed that creates dysfunction in our healthcare system. We must pass Medicare for All," Sanders said on Twitter.
U.S. Senator Michael Bennet, another Democratic presidential contender, called on Sanders, Warren, Harris and other Democratic contenders to reconsider their support for Medicare for All.
